   The cards represent ideas and foci to the reader, which are then interpreted based on where they lay in the pattern that was placed for the querent. Therefore, any set of cards with which the reader is familiar will work for him/her. Many readers will use Tarot because the cards usually have pictures that the querent (person for whom the reading is being done) can also identify with, respond to, and understand at a glance. Some readers are particular about the querent receiving information from them directly, rather than having the querent attempt to read or understand the cards being used, so will use either an eclectic Tarot deck or “regular” playing cards.

   Cartomancy: Similar to Tarot Card reading only Cartomancy is using a traditional deck of PLAYING cards not Tarot cards.

   Regular playing cards are derived from Tarot cards. So they can be used in a similar fashion.

   OK, I read Tarot so I just GOT to answer this question. Its important, I think, to understand just how card decks developed. A few hundred years ago cards came into being as teaching tools, as art work, as a gaming device, what ever. As cards developed and became more formally structured the deck evolved into a grouping of 78 cards, divided into two sections. That’s how most Tarot decks break down, two sections. These are … The Major Arcana, or major mysteries & The Minor Arcana, or minor mysteries. The Major Arcana are often used by themselves for certain readings, dealing as they do with what’s considered aspects of life pertaining to major Universal principles. For this reason they are often thought of as very powerful. People being what they are, and often as not what they are is superstitious, a few hundred years ago folks were afraid of the Major Arcana. As card games developed they used that portion of the deck that deals with more mundane issues, which portion is the Minor Arcana. It was not as “powerful” and so it was safe to play with. The so called Poker deck actually developed from THAT part of the Tarot. So you see, what you think of as a seperate deck of just plain old playing cards is really a part of the Tarot deck. And there are lots of different types of Tarot decks. Most have two sections totaling 78 cards, but not all. I have one complete Tarot deck that consists of 36 cards. Its about 150 years old. I have another that I “invented” that has 54 cards in it. I have another that has 82. If you know what you’re doing with the cards you can pretty much use any deck. Anyway, all of this is just my opinion based on my own studies and how I work with the cards. I’m sure other readers might disagree with certain points, and that’s OK too. But, for what its worth, maybe this added little bit of info helped. ~ Peace & Blessings ~

   The deck of playing cards is actually based on the tarot deck. It works via the same principle. Hearts are cups (emotions), spades are swords (action communication), diamonds are pentacles (money), clubs are rods (creativity communication)…kings, queens, are the same, and then each number represents the rest, like the major arcana, knights, pages/princess. I haven’t used this in a long, long time, but I do remember that much. You can read up on it. They have books at the Wicca shops, sometimes natural food stores have books like this too.

   Look, they are ALL scams. Just like God, just like ghosts, just like unicorns, there is no scientific evidence that any of it is real. Psychics are not actually “psychic”. They are either knowingly fraudulent and highly trained in the art of cold-reading, or they truly believe they are psychic and don’t understand the concept of mathematical probabilities and chance.

   This could turn into one giant discussion about why you should save your money and take control of your own life without some charlatan intervening, but I won’t waste my time (or yours). I encourage you to research any scientific accuracy whatsoever for psychic “phenomena”. You will be surprised just how clever “psychics” are at cold-reading. Cold-reading is a psychological science, not a magical psychic phenomena. Either way, it’s your money, I just hate to see people be so easily sucked into this kind of magical thinking.
